Port Authority Marine Power

A new state-of-the-art pilot boat built in 2014 for the Geraldton Port Authority is powered by Cat®.

  • Marine
The Background

Graeme Taylor from Melbourne-based Hart Marine says the vessel, named Glengarry, is a 16-metre ORC 15.6 HR5 fast pilot boat, the result of collaboration with French naval architects Pantocarene.

EPSA worked with Hart Marine to supply the Cat diesel engines for the vessel, which is designed for fast and reliable transfer of marine pilots in all conditions, 365 days a year.

The Requirement

“Glengarry is one of the most advanced vessels of its kind“ says Graeme.

“She took 10 months to construct, and her innovative design includes a wave-piercing beak bow hull that greatly enhances comfort for the crew.“

“She has a remote-mounted wheelhouse to reduce vibration noise. She is also designed with exceptional levels of useability and safety in mind and to withstand the toughest conditions. She is fully self-righting in the event of a capsize.”

With this type of safety and function, a world-class power solution was required.

  • Reliability

The C18 propulsion engines are built to endure the high demands of the marine environment

  • Durability

With exceptional levels of useability and safety in mind the C18 has to withstand the toughest conditions

The Solution

EPSA supplied Hart Marine with two Cat C18 engines, producing 651 kW each, close coupled to MGX5135A transmissions and a Cat C2.2 marine generator set.

The C18 propulsion engines are built to endure the high demands of the marine environment. They are certified to ISO 9001 international quality standard certification and the International Maritime Organisation’s NOx regulations. They boast maximum uptime, reliability, durability and fuel efficiency.

The Results

“We chose Cat engines for Glengarry’s propulsion package because of the speeds required by Geraldton Port Authority and the impressive horsepower of the C18s,” says Graeme.

“We are also building a 16-metre pilot vessel for Port Kembla Ports Corporation that will have C-rated Cat C18s for its propulsion package, and we look forward to working with EPSA on this project and many more in the future.”
